What is Interventional Pain Management?

For many people who suffer from chronic pain, finding relief is a constant struggle.
Sometimes patients are shuffled back and forth between primary care physicians, specialists, and therapists of all kinds in search of a solution to their pain problems.  Interventional Pain Management can be a useful alternative for patients who have exhausted conservative treatment methods including physical therapy, chiropractic treatments and medical management without success, and may be the solution chronic pain sufferers are looking for. Interventional Pain Management is a specialty that bridges the gap between conservative therapy and invasive open surgery.

There are a high percentage of surgical failures coupled with irreversible outcomes in many surgical procedures of the back and neck such as spinal fusions and laminectomies. Patients and physicians that are searching for less invasive and more effective approaches for the treatment of back and neck pain now have that option with Interventional Pain Management.

According to the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP), interventional pain management is a "discipline of medicine devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of pain related disorders." Interventional pain medicine utilizes a multidisciplinary approach, in which a team of health care professionals works together, to provide a full range of treatments and services for patients suffering from chronic and/or acute pain.

Interventional Pain Management at University Pain Medicine Center is committed to helping you manage your pain. Our goals are to relieve, reduce, or manage pain and improve a patient's overall quality of life through minimally invasive techniques specifically designed to diagnose and treat painful conditions. We also strives to help patients return to their everyday activities quickly and without heavy reliance on medications. Dr. Demesmin’s main objective is to non-surgically intervene using the least yet most effective methods available. He prides himself on providing the most advanced technologies to his patients. As a medical innovator, he is committed to constant research of new developments and improvements within the rapidly growing specialty of Interventional Pain Management.

At the University Pain Medicine Center we treat your pain by reducing the inflammation or desensitizing the painful nerves, spinal discs, joints or muscles responsible for your symptoms. We accomplish this by combining medications and physical modalities with precise x-ray guided injections. Injection therapies to block pain such as epidurals, selective nerve root blocks or facet blocks offer alternatives to major surgery with almost no complications. Implantable medication devices and spinal cord stimulators allow patients to control their therapy through their own personal remote control.

All of our procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, either within the office or at a surgi-center in a relaxed and pleasant environment.  At University Pain Medicine Center our compassionate and expert staff can address your needs and will provide you with a rewarding experience.
